I Know A Girl Who Can Fly

Little things—a girl fascinated by planes

I know a girl who is always excited to spot an aeroplane.
Not the plane still on the tarmac,
But, the one cruising through the deep blue skies,
The one hijacked in her eyes.
She has no wings,
Yet, she is ready to takeoff on the runway to happiness;
I know a girl who can fly.

Doesn’t matter if its a tough day,
She might be numb, fighting her thoughts that sway,
Or teasing her sister about a silly childhood story,
Or listening to her friends talk about a past memory,
But, when the engine roars in the sky;
I know a girl who can fly.

Like the air that goes over the plane,
Exhilaration of the distant-soar rolls over her body,
She runs toward the sound,
Pure joy propels her around,
With every exuberant step,
She is on a high;
I know a girl who can fly.

There it was in the vastness of the blue,
She points to the flying ship in the hue,
Calling out everyone to show the spot.
Some fell for it,
Some giggled,
Some asked her to stop,
Some got back to what they were doing,
But, she continued to gaze until the cloud gobbled the boeing;
I know a girl who can fly.

Turbulence ahead …

I know someone who lost it on her,
Me. Her best friend. Her love. Her partner.
She was once listening to my bad day,
And, the familiar engine roared in our way,
She looked up in search of her happy abode,
I was furious and I stormed into her mind’s cockpit,
She crash-landed from the skies to my eyes,
Killing all her excitement aboard;
I know a girl who used to fly.

Years later …

My daughter got excited about a plane she spotted,
I ran to her,
Hugged her tight to celebrate her joy,
To listen to her,
To read her eyes,
There it was,
The crash debris,
The black box,
I felt what I cut-short,
The happiness of a girl who can fly;
I know a girl who can fly.
